When caring for a bird, such as a parakeet, it’s important to know as much as possible about it. This includes knowing how long they can go without access to food and water. This way you will be optimally prepared for any situation.
Most animals can go longer without food than without water, parakeets, on the other hand, can go longer without water than without food.
They can go up to 24 hours without food and up to 48 hours without water. However, you have to keep in mind that just because they can last so long without water doesn’t mean they have to go so long without access. Prolonged inaccessibility to food and water is not good for their health.
How Often Should Parakeets Eat?

The nice thing about parakeets is that unlike other animals like dogs, they are not going to overload if they have access to a lot of food. They simply eat throughout the day when they are hungry. For this reason, you can have food in their cage at any time, and they will simply eat when they are hungry.
It is therefore extremely easy to take care of their diet; often you only need to add food to their cage once a day. There are even automatic feeders that do this work for you – just fill the feeder and it feeds your parakeet drip.
It also means that parakeets are one of the few pets that can be left alone for a day or two, since they can be left with enough food to support them for that time.
How Much Food Do Parakeets Need?
Parakeets eat only a half to a teaspoon of seeds per day for small birds and up to a tablespoon for larger ones. They should also eat fresh fruits and vegetables every day.
Parakeets are quite picky eaters, however. For example, they only eat the top layer of their seeds. I have nowhere found the reason for this behavior, but it seems that all parakeets do this. Maybe it’s because they think the top layer is cool enough?
Since they only eat the top layer, the best feeder for these birds is a shallow feeder; this increases the surface area of the seeds and reduces the depth.
What Do Parakeets Eat?
Millet seeds are the favorite food of most parakeets. However, pellets are a healthier option for them!
Parakeets eat pellets, seeds, vegetables and fruits. Most parakeets love the seeds, but the pellets are healthier for them. The seeds are high in calories, fat, and lacking in important vitamins and minerals. A diet made up entirely of seeds can lead to malnutrition in your bird.
Pellets, on the other hand, are specifically created to contain optimal nutrition for parakeets. Unfortunately, most parakeets don’t like to eat pellets as much as seeds. Some of them will even starve themselves to death if you try to switch their diet from seeds to pellets.
The best way to get your budgie from seeds to pellets is to make this change gradually; start by giving her a small amount of pellets and fewer seeds than usual, then gradually increase her intake of pellets until she only eats pellets. They can still eat seeds from time to time when fed pellets, but this should no longer constitute the majority of their diet.
An optimal diet for parakeets consists mainly of pellets, with seeds, fruits and vegetables in smaller quantities.
Remember I said parakeets are picky eaters? They are so picky that if you give them a seed mix like many bird owners do, they will only eat their favorites and ignore the others. Most parakeets prefer millet seeds and choose them from the seed mix.
Why Do Parakeets Need to Eat So Often?
The reason why your parakeet needs to eat frequently is due to its extremely high metabolism. Some animals, like snakes, for example, can go weeks without eating because their metabolism is very slow. Parakeets have a very high metabolism, which means they burn the food they eat in no time and need to eat more frequently to continue living.
They will not starve to death within the 24 hour time frame I mentioned earlier, but that is when it becomes very dangerous for them to go without food any longer. They will usually starve to death if they go without food for more than 48 hours, but that depends on how much fat your parakeet has stored and the temperature of its surroundings.
Parakeets, being desert birds, are not very well adapted to live in cold temperatures. They have to burn significantly more calories in cold weather to warm up, which requires more calories.
How Often Should Parakeets Drink?
Parakeets are native to the Australian Outback desert, and for this reason, they don’t drink a lot. Some owners never even see them drink and wonder if the parakeets need water. Like all animals, parakeets need water, but not too much.
As they are desert birds, they evolved to go long periods without water and to survive without drinking much. They are also small and light creatures, who do not need a lot of water to support their bodies. Also, like all birds, they don’t have sweat glands, so they don’t lose water through sweat like we do.
However, even if you feel like your parakeet can live forever with a small bowl of water, you still need to give it fresh water frequently. Parakeets are quite picky about the water they drink; if it’s dirty, they won’t touch it. For this reason, I would change the water at least once a day. The best time to do this is when you feed them, so you don’t forget.
They really like bathing in their water bowls, and that makes their water dirtier, another good reason to give them fresh water frequently!
Can Parakeets Drink Anything Other Than Water?
They mainly have to drink water and nothing else. However, you can dilute a small amount of honey in water and give it to them if it’s a special occasion.
You don’t have to do this often as they shouldn’t have too much sugar in their diet, but every once in a while it won’t hurt them and make the water a little sweeter for them.
Can I Leave My Parakeet Alone for a Weekend?
Technically, you can do this if she has access to enough food and water, but I don’t recommend it. Parakeets are very social creatures that need a lot of love and attention. If you disappeared for a weekend, they’ll miss you, especially if you only have one budgie in a cage. If they have another parakeet as a companion, the problem is less serious, but it is still not ideal.
It’s best to ask someone you know to take care of your parakeet while you are away.
